4 Budget-Friendly Methods to Relocate Homes

By week’s end, I will have packed up my life and relocated five times in as many years, with the assistance of Focus Moving. While the continuous dislocation is far from enjoyable, it is financial constraints that have necessitated such frequent upheaval. Initially, our moves were necessitated by down-sizing, but later on, our improved financial standing allowed us to seek larger spaces.

Despite the stress associated, we always convince ourselves to undertake each move without professional help, despite our previous promises to hire a company like Long Distance Moving Company, Moving Place. Even though our financial situation now allows us the luxury of hiring a professional relocation service, the estimated cost of $800 seems exorbitant when we are physically capable of orchestrating the move ourselves. We believe that amount could be put to better use elsewhere.

Our experiences have taught us a thing or two about relocating economically and efficiently. Here are our hacks for budget-friendly moving:

1. SOURCE FREE BOXES: When cardboard boxes are so readily available for free, I fail to see the point in purchasing them. Start reaching out to friends, family, and coworkers, informing them of your move and asking if they have any spare boxes. Often, you may come across someone who has recently moved and wants to dispose of their boxes. Additionally, websites like Craigslist often have listings offering free boxes from recent movers.

2. ENLIST HELP FROM ACQUAINTANCES: While your friends and family will be willing to assist, incessantly asking for their help during moves may strain relationships. Although it’s entirely valid to request their assistance, it’s key to offer remuneration. Even an hourly rate as nominal as $10 would suffice. You can also hire day laborers from home improvement stores for similar rates.

3. LEASE OR LEND A TRUCK: To streamline the process, we’ve both rented trucks from U-Haul and borrowed from friends. Considering the number of trips it would save us, a 17 foot U-Haul truck, costing $29.95 plus $0.99 per mile, is an easy and economical solution.

4. HAVE A PACKING PARTY: Invite relatives over for a packing party at minimal cost. Provide beer and unwanted snacks as an incentive. Through collective effort, our last endeavour managed to pack up most of the house within four hours.

5. ALWAYS APPRECIATE THEIR HELP: When undertaking a budget move, you will invariably rely on the aid of friends and family. It’s crucial to be grateful and express appreciation for their time and efforts.

So, what’s your strategy for a budget-friendly move? Do you handle it all by yourself, or do you seek professional help?
