7 Affordable Fall Excursions for Your Children

The school year can be challenging, especially for kids required to study from home the entire day. To break the monotony, I’ve decided to take my son on inexpensive educational outings. This year, traditional field trips might not be plentiful owing to social distancing measures. However, children certainly enjoy and look forward to these experiences. Despite juggling work with homeschooling, I’m keen on incorporating these enjoyable, yet simple, excursions into our schedule. Planning a local outing with your family—even if your kids are engaged in e-learning or attending school part-time—can create anticipation and offer valuable practical learning.

Here’s my list of seven budget-friendly fall outings for your kids.

1. SCIENCE MUSEUM
Science museums offer an enriching experience. The variety of new discoveries and activities captivate young minds. Typically, they feature interactive exhibits and educational films on various subjects. I appreciate science museums as they reinforce the idea that science learning extends beyond textbooks. Museums can be costly unless you’re entitled to a group discount. However, you can save a substantial amount of money by visiting on free-admission days. I embraced this strategy recently with my son saving around $60. We wore masks due to Covid-19 protocols, but the spacious museum made social distancing easy. The museum also provided complimentary disposable styluses to enable safe interaction with displays.

2. ZOO
The zoo is a crowd-pleaser for all age groups. With winter approaching, now is the ideal time to schedule a zoo visit. Similar to museums, zoos may offer free admission on certain days. All you need to do is turn it into an educational experience and focus on exploring specific sections.

3. LOCAL FARM OR FARMER’S MARKET
A local farmer’s market outing combines learning with shopping. It’s a low-cost experience as you only need to pay for your purchases. Have a chat with vendors to learn about their products. This visit can extend beyond food, offering other intriguing items and kinds of produce. Presently, my son and I have taken an interest in studying plants and gardening. If possible, contact local farms in advance to schedule your visit. Farms may also have products to sell, providing dual benefits of exploration and supporting local farmers.

4. STATE PARK
State parks offer free access and might just be located close by. Plan an inexpensive outing to explore these parks before the weather changes. You might indulge in nature walks or check the visitor’s center for any ongoing activities.

5. VISIT AN ARBORETUM
An arboretum—an open-air botanical garden focusing on trees—can be an entertaining and educational outing. If you lack access to an arboretum, a forest preserve or nature walk can work just as well.

6. OUTDOOR HISTORY MUSEUM
An outdoor history museum can be an enriching and affordable experience. As we’re studying the New England colonies, we discovered a nearby colonial-themed museum offering entry for just $5.

7. NEARBY LANDMARK
When you’re out of ideas, consider visiting a nearby landmark. These landmarks can create teachable moments—have fun explaining their historical significance. If your town lacks landmarks, visit neighboring cities known for their historical significance.

The fall season is the perfect opportunity to enjoy inexpensive yet fun educational field trips with your kids. These experiences don’t need to be grand or expensive. This school year may be distinct, but we shouldn’t dismiss the value of educational field trips.
