As Valentine’s Day approaches, coincidentally during the long President’s Day weekend, I found myself brainstorming economical weekend escapes in southern California. Eric and I have a fondness for these affordable weekend adventures. Presently, we are enjoying our DINK (Dual Income, No Kids) lifestyle and don’t hesitate to spontaneously disappear for a weekend trip, leaving our adorable pet in our parents’ care.

We always aim to extract maximum enjoyment from these economical weekend escapes. The idea is to experience a mini-vacation, even though we have to resume work on Monday. Here are some economical escapes you could consider in southern California:

San Diego
San Diego is full of delights – vibrant nightlife, upscale dining, tranquil spas, and a laid-back beach vibe. A day can be joyfully spent exploring Old Town State Park, widely regarded as California’s birthplace. The local Mexican restaurants are popular, especially for their enormous margaritas and fresh tortillas. For an unforgettable evening, the Gas Lamp District with its many restaurants and bars is unbeatable. A day trip to the world-renowned San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, or the USS Midway Museum will also be worth your time.

Temecula
Spend a weekend wine tasting in Temecula, and you’ll return feeling as refreshed as after a week-long vacation. This younger sibling to the Napa Valley exudes a welcoming charm. Here, wine tasting is a casual affair, enjoyable for beginners and connoisseurs alike. After a full day of tasting, you’ll likely retire to your room early, but if you’re in the mood, there’s nightlife in Old Town Temecula, hot air balloon rides, and spa experiences at South Coast Winery.

Los Angeles
While the metropolis with its traffic and pollution may seem off-putting, playing tourist for a weekend can be quite an adventure. Spend a day exploring Hollywood and Highland, take a tour of the stars’ residences, watch a TV show taping, and maybe even grab a cocktail at a celebrity hotspot like The Standard or Roosevelt Hotel.

Las Vegas
If you hail from southern California, you’re no stranger to the excitement of Vegas. To avoid the Friday rush, consider leaving work early.

Big Bear
Escape the hustle-and-bustle of city life and immerse yourself in the serenity of Big Bear. Whether you prefer skiing in winter or hiking in summer, the mountains are always welcoming.

Catalina Island
To get the best deal, opt for a package that includes both transportation and accommodation. This little island will give you a taste of southern California’s very own Martha’s Vineyard.

Santa Ynez Valley
If you’ve already explored Temecula, the Santa Ynez Valley is waiting for you with its many wineries in Los Olivos and Solvang– an extension of the Santa Barbara wine valley.

Santa Barbara
This charming town is an oasis of tranquility, perfect for a peaceful getaway. Rich in history with a vibrant downtown area, Santa Barbara promises an enjoyable experience.
