Airbnb Extends its Services to Cuba

Following President Obama’s pronouncement in December 2014, which permitted limited travel and trade with Cuba after half a century of seclusion, Airbnb disclosed their plans for expansion into Cuba just yesterday.

“We are thrilled to announce that, effective immediately, authorized U.S. travelers can now immerse themselves in the unique culture and embrace the warm hospitality that makes Cuba so extraordinary, thanks to our burgeoning Cuban community,” conveyed Airbnb co-founder Nathan Blecharczyk.

Although it’s now slightly more accessible for Americans to visit Cuba and engage in commercial activities, the relaxed travel constraints don’t entirely open the door to conventional tourism.

To visit Cuba for business, education, or any of the 12 other permissible reasons detailed by the U.S. government, Americans still need to secure a license. At present, only licensed U.S. travelers can avail themselves of this service, but Airbnb intends to pursue the necessary permissions to cater to tourists from other nations as well.
