Federal prosecutors are holding seven individuals accountable for fraud, stemming from accusations of falsely procuring over $2 billion for a relief program related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The Department of Justice revealed an indictment on Thursday, suggesting that the accused had lodged false claims for approximately 40,000 people across Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and other Gulf states, without their knowledge or agreement. This false representation was combined with identity theft, where the defendants reportedly used the victims’ names, addresses, social security numbers, and further personal details to anglicize sham clients for the pending litigation against BP due to the oil spill incident.
