Four Goals I Aim to Achieve in 2014

I’m finding it hard to fathom that we’re already ushering in the new year. In retrospect, 2013 has whizzed by like no other! As is tradition at the beginning of each year, I’ve decided to outline my own personal goals as we embark on this exciting new journey.

1. MAINTAIN RETIREMENT SAVINGS
I broke new ground in 2013 by setting up my first Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Despite the challenges, driven by extra income from side jobs, I reached my maximum contribution limit – an achievement I take pride in. Although my journey as a self-employed individual starting from 2014 might complicate my financial dynamics, I am committed to continue saving for my retirement. Though my income may fluctuate, I believe in the importance of this goal and aspire to fully accomplish it!

2. INSTILL MODESTY IN MY CHILDREN
2014 promises to be a pivotal year for me, as I prepare to become a mother to a pair of twins this April! I anticipate this will bring both significant personal changes and financial shifts. My aim is to limit the overload of baby paraphernalia and to prevent our home from being inundated with toys and gadgets. My intent is to ensure a modest lifestyle for our family, avoiding excessive materialism right from the outset. This is a key objective I am setting for the upcoming year.

3. REMAIN FRUGAL
Despite its broad scope, I must constantly remind myself to live frugally. Upon my return to the United States, it becomes increasingly challenging to resist life’s luxuries and novelties. The preceding December saw an unusual surge in my expenses, primarily due to setting up my new home. A hefty credit card bill served as a stark reminder that I can uphold the minimalist lifestyle I was accustomed to during my three-year stint on the island. Thus, 2014 will mark a year dedicated to simplicity and disciplined spending.

4. KEEP THINGS ORGANIZED
As you may have gathered from my previous points, I’m currently in a ‘nesting’ phase. I find immense satisfaction in a neat, well-organized space, which resonates with tranquility and stress-free living. In the coming year, I plan on adhering to a minimalist lifestyle, decluttering my home, recycling my old work attire, and essentially embracing the philosophy of ‘less is more’. This may seem like a daunting task, but tackled step by step or room by room, it becomes significantly more manageable.

I have a feeling I’m not alone in planning my 2014, so feel free to share your goals in the comments below!
