New studies indicate that Netflix is responsible for slightly over 33% of non-mobile internet usage. In the latest Global Internet Phenomena report focusing on Latin America and North America, Netflix USA led the pack, contributing to 33.81% of the total fixed-access Internet traffic. This figure puts Netflix well ahead of its nearest five competitors combined and more than doubles the traffic attributed to YouTube, which sits in the second spot with 14.63%.
When you look purely at the consumption, or downstream traffic, and exclude the negligible upstream traffic – since Netflix is predominantly non-interactive – its dominance becomes even more pronounced. Netflix’s share of the downstream traffic stands at a significant 36.48%, which is more than the total of the next eight companies combined on the top 10 list.
